Spring Yard Work

Here comes the sun! Use this checklist to help prep the yard for summer fun.


Spring Yard Work

  • DEBRIS & CLEANUP
  • Put tools, outdoor toys, and sports equipment in the garage
  • Dispose of any pet waste
  • Prepare compost bin
  • Prepare yard waste bins
  • Protect things that could be damaged from lawn mower debris – move cars out of the driveway and put on protective clothing
  • TREES & BUSHES
  • Check for dead/damaged tree limbs or potential hazards to the house, remove if necessary
  • Trim bushes, hedges, and perennials, clearing walkways and headspace
  • Dig up or destroy invasive species before they get out of control
  • Remove large sticks, leaves, or rocks that may damage lawn tools
  • LAWN CARE
  • Edge or trim the perimeter and large cracks in the pavement where plants have sprouted
  • Mow the lawn
  • Aerate and dethatch grass
  • Plant grass seed or re-sod patchy areas
  • Fertilize and apply weed control
  • Dust off the irrigation system – set sprinklers and/or dewinterize hoses and spigots
  • For gravel or rock beds, refill
  • GARDEN PLOTS
  • Plan ahead – map out garden beds and plants based on sun exposure
  • Thoroughly weed existing plots
  • Loosen and turnover soil
  • Inspect for pests or critters – setup deterrents and check for disease
  • Test soil, add compost or organic fertilizers to balance
  • Add mulch or other topsoil protectants with special attention to young plants and drainage
  • PLANTS
  • Decide on annuals, perennials, herbs, or other edible plants
  • Check your hardiness zone for instructions on when to plant
  • Native plants require less maintenance, follow companion planting guides for increased yield
  • Group plants by similar water and/or sunlight needs
  • Purchase plants or grow from seedlings
  • Ensure you have proper supports – trellises, stakes, or fencing
  • Protect young seedlings from harsh weather
  • OUTDOOR LIVING
  • Clean outdoor furniture & grill
  • Stock up on propane and/or charcoal
  • Switch out seasonal lighting – replace broken bulbs and shorted wires
  • Assess deck and patio wear and tear
  • Hose down outdoor rugs
  • Wipe down outdoor heating elements and replace fuel
  • Hot tub maintenance
