Postcards from Spring Break: New Shoes

It was too rainy to walk around Portland looking for kids’ shoes. So we returned to our room and ordered them online, instead. The particular site I chose has always delivered in 24 hours in the past. I did feel like I was taking a gamble, though—and I am not in any way a gambler.

But what was the worst that could happen? Apparently, the answer depends on if you work behind the hotel front desk or want to take an elevator in this century.

After I told Lucy that her shoes had arrived in Portland at 5:58 this morning, she made several trips to the front desk to see if they had finally completed the last leg of their journey.

The third time, she said, “I accidentally pressed the button to the 10th floor. But I noticed on the 8th floor and got off on the 9th.”

“And I talked to the lady in the lobby,” she added. “She said she will inform me when my shoes arrive.”

Hint taken.

True to her word, the woman behind the front desk called a few minutes later to let Lucy know she could come down for real. Success!
