8 Creative and Cool Home Storage Solutions

Every household runs into the challenge of keeping the place tidy and clutter-free. Nowadays, it's possible to stay organized without compromising creativity or design aesthetics.

We found 8 awesome home storage solutions that skip the tried and true Rubbermaid containers and instead focus on innovation, modern design, and a little bit of geek nostalgia to create memorable and versatile furniture.

Tetris Bookshelves

Tetris Bookshelves

Pay homage to the classic Nintendo block clearing game by throwing out Ikea bookshelves in favor of the more creative and visually striking Tetris shapes version. You can create a custom design shape by assembling the pieces into various dimensions, making this bookshelf storage solution both unique and versatile.

Brave Space Design in Brooklyn offers Tetris bookshelves for purchase, but if you're unwilling to spend $3,500 per set, you can build your own by following this step-by-step how-to on Instructibles.

Nintendo Controller Coffee Table

Nintendo Controller Table

Our Nintendo tribute continues with quite possibly the most dedicated and impressive gamer storage solution we've come across. Created by Kyle Downs, this original Nintendo controller coffee table not only provides ample storage for games and other items, it actually works and can be used to play games. You may feel like Mario in Giant World, but it's still wildly original and brings larger-than-life nostalgia to your living room.

Sofa Bunk Bed

Sofa Bunk Bed

Sofa beds have a bit of a stigma to them –  they seem to either look good but transform into a bulky, lumpy bed, or they're passably comfortable but unattractive. Furniture company Bonbon has provided a well-designed and storage-efficient solution with their Doc sofa bunk beds. Their clean, modern sofa quickly and easily converts into two bunk beds, providing both seating and sleeping space for overnight guests without compromising style or space.

Bookshelves with Built-In Reading Nooks

Bookshelf Cave

We've seen a couple bookshelf designs that include a little reading area for you to crawl into and pore over various literary works. This concept is a smart space saver and can also look really cool. Sakurah makes a bookshelf “cave”, and both Thomas Mills and David Garcia have created circular bookcase concepts that you can read in or even walk in like a giant literary hamster cage.

Robot Dresser

Robot Dresser

Reddit user pegothejerk transforms old furniture into creative and whimsical storage pieces. His past creations include a monster built out of an old cedar trunk and an adorable princess throne dresser that doubles as storage and a seat for his niece.

Our favorite, however, is his newest creation, a robot dresser he fashioned from old table scraps. This piece of furniture would be perfect for little boys, sci-fi fans, or folks who enjoy having a little whimsy in their lives. (Check out the creator's Google Doc to see a pictorial of how this masterpiece was built.

The Bike Shelf

Bike Shelft

Urban cyclists and bike commuters often have a tough time storing their bikes if they don't have a garage. Chris Brigham came up with an aesthetically simple yet pleasant solution by developing the bike shelf. You can mount your bike onto the wall easily and use the shelf for books or bike accessories. Now your bicycle doubles as a mode of transportation and a piece of art.

Pop-Up Office Furniture

Pop-up Furniture

Office storage can be especially frustrating, but designer Nataly Bublik has envisioned office furniture originally intended for open space businesses that can provide a clean and modern look for a home office. The desk has a foldable lid that doubles as a bulletin board, and built-in drawers store office supplies. The end result is a sleek look that transforms your office from cluttered and chaotic to bright and chic.

Lego Furniture

Lego Furniture

For kids, nothing is as versatile as the Lego brick. They can whip up countless creations with a few different block shapes, funneling te imagination into diverse transformations. Why not bring the same design concept to furniture?

Gizmodo reported on LunaBlocks, a company that created colorful blocks that can be used to assemble couches, chairs, ottomans, and other pieces of furniture. Unfortunately, it appears as if LunaBlocks is now defunct, leaving the door wide open for other furniture companies to produce and sell these innovative blocks.
